canals at the world heritage list
With its splendid merchant's houses many feel the ring of canals is the prettiest part of town. It certainly is the most photographed. Peter Paul de Baar, editor in chief of Ons Amsterdam, says there's every reason to add it to the World Heritage List.
Kwakoe festival
Speeches have been made, the choir has sung: Kwakoe has started. What started off as a local football tournament is now one of Holland's largest ethnic festivals. Its main ingredients are delicious food, culture and music.
World Cup at Museum Square
A packed Museum square sees Holland win. On Tuesday, at least 10,000 football fans saw Holland beat Uruguay 3-2. Another large screen was put up on Westergasterras in Westerpark. On Sunday Holland will play Spain in the final. If they win, there'll be a parade through the canals on Tuesday followed by a ceremony on Museum square. When Holland won the European Cup in 1988
the canal parade let to some unexpected scenes.
monumental building renovated
Work has finished on the distinctive Rembrandt square building designed in the twenties by Berlage and Ouendag. The extensive, two-year renovation of the 40,000 square metre building has been completed. Centrepiece is the glass lobby.
Fashion Week
From 14-18 July, the Westergasfabriek will hos the 13th Fashion Week with runway shows by Iris van Herpen, Hunkemoller and Daryl van Wouw. Admission to these is by invitation only. But there's a public programme too: Fashion Week DOWNTOWN. DOWNTOWN shows, parties and exhibitions start on 10 July.
Brazilian Summer Sessions
On 10 July, the Brazilian Summer Session kick off at the Bimhuis. First up at 8.30 pm is the documentary 'Beyond Ipanema' on Brazilian music followed by a concert bij Moinho and sets by DJs Paulao and Mulat.
book fair in Amsterdam
Summer is the season for book fairs. On Sunday 11 July, there's a special discount book fair on Dam square. Visit over 100 book stalls selling a wide range of genres or have your own books valued. The fair is on from 10am to 5 pm.
