New Amsterdam film festival

New film festival World Cinema Amsterdam features the best independent films from Latin America, Asia and Africa. The 63 films will be screened at the Rialto film theatre and for free on Marie Heinekenplein, in the open air.

FIFA inspectors visit the Amsterdam ArenA

Holland and Belgium are hoping to organize the 2018 World Cup. For this, all venues must comply with FIFA regulations. This week, FIFA inspectors visited the Amsterdam ArenA stadium. If Holland and Belgium win their 2018 World Cup bid  the ArenA will have to expand its capacity from 51,000 seatsto 85,000.

Canaries give directions

What's yellow and gives directions? The Schiphol canary. On busy days, airport staff in bright yellow jackets are on hand to give directions to passengers. Most people ask how to get to their gate or check-in desk.

Documentary on Parade

Pushing a swing ride chair to make it swing even more. And this is child's play. At night it gets a lot wilder. Documentary maker Bart Vermaten can't get enough of this particular ride.

Sail

From 19 to 23 August, Amsterdam will host the 8th edition of SAIL. The theme is a nautical encounter between past, present and future. SAIL Amsterdam is the largest free public event in Holland. It takes place all over town and, of course, on the river IJ.

Amsterdam Canals on UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE list

The 17th century canal ring area has become a world heritage site. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee added it to the list during the 34th session of its meeting in Brasilia. It is the ninth World Heritage site in the Netherlands.

Parade festival arrives in Amsterdam

The Parade is back in town. From 6 to 22 August the Martin Luther King Park will host over 75 performances by artists from, among other places, New York, Turkey and Amsterdam.

Photo exhibition “The Jordaan” at the Basel

Photos of the Jordaan area by Dolf Toussaint are on show at the Amsterdam City Archives. In the sixties, Toussaint took many pictures of this working class area focusing on people rather than buildings.

Kwakoe Summer Festival during the summer

The Kwakoe Summer Festival is Holland's largest ethnic festival. Each Saturday and Sunday in July and August it takes place in Bijlmer Park. It offers a wide range of events and activities including live music, film, sports, food, dance, information and meetings.
