Amsterdam Canals on UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE list

The 17th century canal ring area has become a world heritage site. The UNESCO World Heritage Committee added it to the list during the 34th session of its meeting in Brasilia. It is the ninth World Heritage site in the Netherlands.

Parade festival arrives in Amsterdam

The Parade is back in town. From 6 to 22 August the Martin Luther King Park will host over 75 performances by artists from, among other places, New York, Turkey and Amsterdam.

Photo exhibition “The Jordaan” at the Basel

Photos of the Jordaan area by Dolf Toussaint are on show at the Amsterdam City Archives. In the sixties, Toussaint took many pictures of this working class area focusing on people rather than buildings.

Kwakoe Summer Festival during the summer

The Kwakoe Summer Festival is Holland's largest ethnic festival. Each Saturday and Sunday in July and August it takes place in Bijlmer Park. It offers a wide range of events and activities including live music, film, sports, food, dance, information and meetings.

Coverbands on Leidseplein Live

On 13, 14 and 15 August, Leidseplein is the venue for a free music festival. The line-up includes nine of Holland's best cover bands as well as a great many well and lesser-known DJs.

Grachtenfestival

This year's Canal Festival takes place from 14 to 22 August. Highlight will be the Prinsengracht Concert on 21 August.

Healty Burgers at Burgermeester

Two years ago they opened Burgermeester, a hamburger joint with a difference. They use fresh, organic products. Nothing is pre-cooked. Everything is made to order and healthy to boot.

Plants in the spotlight

The exhibition 'Plants in the Spotlight' is on until September 30th at the Hortus Botanicus. It shows great biodiversity with fifty different plants. All are listed as endangered species.

Portraits by Frans Pannekoek

From June the 25th until October the 3rd Frans Pannekoek's works of art are on display at the Rembrandt house. His dry needle prints of landscapes, animals and self-portraits are highly regarded.
